HM Government - Have Your Say: Hampshire And The Solent Devolution 07 March 2025 HM Government want to hear your views on creating a new mayoral combined county authority for Hampshire and the Solent to bring devolution to the area. WHAT IS ENGLISH DEVOLUTION? Devolution is where areas and their local leaders gain powers and funding previously held by national government. This means important decisions are made by someone who understands the needs of your community and what changes will have the best and biggest impact. WHAT IS A MAYORAL COMBINED COUNTY AUTHORITY? Mayoral combined county authorities are organisations made up of a group of councils who agree to take on devolved powers and funding so that they can take decisions together across a bigger area. Notes From Our October 2024 'Open Forum' Meeting 15 February 2025 We met at the United Reform Church one dark, wet evening last October and had a surprisingly good turnout considering the conditions and the challenge of parking in that area at that time of night - we hope our next meeting on the 19th March will be as well attended. Our secretary, Patrick O'Hara took the following comprehensive notes of each of the speakers presentations: The City Local Plan and the Neighbourhood Plan Lucy Howard, Head of Planning Policy at Portsmouth City Council, discussed the emerging City Plan. The plan has recently been consulted on to ensure it is legally compliant and ‘sound’ (Reg19). Once this process is completed, it will be submitted to the Inspect… Read More
Bransbury Park project gets the go-ahead 14 February 2025 Planning permission was granted in December 2024 for Portsmouth City Council's plans for Bransbury Park. The plans include a new leisure centre with a swimming pool, learner pool and gym, built on the old hard courts. This will include a new GP surgery for the Lighthouse Practice, who will move from Devonshire Avenue. There will be a relocated play area with new equipment, and the miniature railway will be kept in the same position. In addition, the old changing pavilion will be replaced with a modern facility, with a new astro-turf pitch and multi-use games area to the north of the new building. At the time of going to print, Portsmouth City Council are working with the contractors, Willm… Read More
Gas Engine House Closes To Visitors 14 February 2025 The volunteers very much regret that the Gas Engine House remains closed to visitors. An update on the situation. On 6 March 2024 Portsmouth City Council stopped us from recruiting volunteers. Since then we have lost some volunteers and no longer have sufficient to safely open to the public. On 8 May 2024 PCC told us to stop operating the machinery and to stop using power tools. The reason given for the above is that PCC's Health and Safety documentation was not up to date. The Gas Engine House is part of Portsmouth City Museums, which falls within the Directorate of Culture, Leisure and Regulatory Services. From July 2024 we have been permitted to turn over the engines for conservatio… Read More
Update from Forty-4-Frankie 22 January 2025 As you will recall, Forty-4-Frankie (F4F) is a campaign aiming to raise funds for forty more 24-hour defibrillators in Portsmouth and increase awareness and confidence in using this emergency equipment. F4F was launched almost a year ago in March 2024 and since our last Milton Matters in October 2024 we have installed and registered six more 24-hour defibrillators. This means that there are now 11 more defibrillators available around Portsmouth - so we are (just) over a quarter of the way to our target of 40!!! The recently installed sites are at: Aqua Cars, 12-13 Rodney Road, Portsmouth, PO4 8DF Their General Manager Bruce Hall is pictured here. With special thanks going to Ian McNiven… Read More
Ministry of Defence Worried By AQUIND Proposal 28 August 2024 The Secretary of State has yet to make a decision on whether the proposed AQUIND Interconnector between Normandy in France and the UK can go ahead. If it does, objectors fear untold traffic chaos and environmental damage as trenches are dug for the cables from where they are proposed to land at Eastney Beach, up through the city of Portsmouth and onward through Widley and Waterlooville to Lovedean. One of the reasons for the delay in making a decision was because the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had asked for time to review the proposal. They have now done so and their recommendation is that the development does not get approval owing to fears about security at the naval base in Portsmo… Read More
'Let's Stop Aquind' Refutes Aquind's Grossly Misleading Claims About Public Support for Its Unwanted Interconnector Project 11 July 2024 PORTSMOUTH, HAMPSHIRE 10.7.24 With regulators on both sides of the English Channel1 minded to reject the Aquind Interconnector2 and the Ministry of Defence preparing to submit evidence of its "significant national security concerns" around the project3, Aquind Limited yesterday made grossly misleading claims about the level of public support for the Aquind Interconnector in Portsmouth. These claims are being rejected in the strongest possible terms by grassroots community group Let's Stop Aquind (LSA), which has campaigned for nearly 4 years to stop the damage that the Aquind Interconnector would cause to the environment and economy of Portsmouth and the South Downs, and the health of the… Read More

13 / 14 Bus Route Frequency 26 June 2024 A local resident asked one of our councillors, "Chatting to neighbours who have given up their car, I got inspired to write to you about bus 13. Unfortunately we only have 1 bus every hour in one direction BUT used to have a bus every half an hour. Is this not something which could be achieved? If we want to reduce car usage we have to offer more public transport. " We thought the response from the council transport development manager, Peter Shelley, would be of wider interest so here it is: "It might be useful if I provided some background. Most bus services are provided commercially paid for by the fares collected. How often the buses run is generally determined by the… Read More
