The volunteers very much regret that the Gas Engine House remains closed to visitors.
An update on the situation.
On 6 March 2024 Portsmouth City Council stopped us from recruiting volunteers. Since then we have lost some volunteers and no longer have sufficient to safely open to the public.
On 8 May 2024 PCC told us to stop operating the machinery and to stop using power tools.
The reason given for the above is that PCC's Health and Safety documentation was not up to date. The Gas Engine House is part of Portsmouth City Museums, which falls within the Directorate of Culture, Leisure and Regulatory Services.
From July 2024 we have been permitted to turn over the engines for conservation purposes once per month. However Gas and Oil requested in November 2023 for maintenance have not been provided.
Prior to this action by PCC we were open to the public (free of charge) on Wednesday mornings and on the last Sunday of each month.
